In the fall of 2007, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra recorded Pictures at an Exhibition at Roy Thomson hall in Toronto. It was the first time I had ever played the New York Generation One Yamaha C trumpet with the TSO. Of course, it was a gamble to switch trumpets just before a live recording session, but in my short time practicing the new trumpet I could feel how easy and responsive it was. Put simply it was easier to play than my regular C trumpet. My only concern was would I still sound the same? That question was quickly answered at the first rehearsal break when a friend of mine in the orchestra asked if I had made any changes to my equipment. I said why, does it sound different. They replied yes, a lot better… I have been on the Yamaha ever since and never looked back!

I’ve been playing Yamaha trumpets and flugelhorns for most of my professional career, stretching back four decades. I’ve owned practically every Xeno model, in some cases several of them. My current horn is the 25th Anniversary Xeno, which I’ve been playing since it was released. I wouldn’t have purchased as many trumpets as I have if not for Yamaha’s determination to innovate and push the boundaries of trumpet design. When I was 11 years old, I received my very first trumpet from my father: a beautiful Yamaha 100S. From that moment, a long journey started... this Yamaha 100S trumpet has been with me from the day I had it till my college years at Peking University. The intonation of C trumpets always bothered me while playing since the taper of leader pipe is not enough. So when I tried my first Xeno C trumpet, I was amazed by its high level of intonation.
